    Web Maps Help

    The maps below are available through the ArcGIS.COM online viewer.  They are viewable with any computer, smart phone or tablet,  no web browser add-ons of any kind are required.  These are very simple yet dynamic maps, you can zoom in or out with the on-screen plus or minus symbol, or the mouse scroll wheel. You can click and hold your left mouse button on the map and pan it in any direction.  Click with your left mouse button on a map feature for pop-up information.  If you click the "View larger map" you will have many additional functions (see more details below the layer list).

    If you click the "View larger map" you will have many additional functions, including the ability to change base maps, edit many of the maps to add point, line or areas, photos and notes, and share your additions with other group members.

    Note the three buttons in the legend area.  The default is the description information.  The middle button "Show contents of map", enters a map layer mode, allowing you to turn on other map layers residing on the Geodata Services map server.  To see the layers, click directly on the word in blue "SVCCWeb" to drop down the list of additional map layers. Clicking the box next to additional layers toggles them visible/invisible for the current map session, allowing you to look at overlays of multiple layers.  The third button on the far right "Show map legend" displays a map legend.

    If you wish to add  to your version of the map click the "Edit" menu.  Many maps are editable but not all (the administrative boundaries and land cover are not).  On an editable map, select an item from the legend template and it will highlight your selection.  After selecting an item, add the item to your map by clicking on the map.  This creates graphical items on top of the map content, but they won't change the underlying map layers.  If you are logged in and a member of ArcGIS Online (It is free to join and use for non-commercial purposes), you can save your edited map and share it with others.  If you are not a member, you can still print, or screen grab your modifications, but they won't be saved.

    Documentation for each map and map layer is described on the map's page.  Most often this takes the form of a web link (URL) to the original documentation from the data source.  A common term for these documents is "metadata".  All map layers in the project were clipped to the boundary of the Swan River Watershed (# from the 4th Code hydrologic unit layer from the Montana State Library.  The 4th code watershed source metadata can be found at http://nris.mt.gov/nsdi/nris/subbasin24k.html.  All of the maps use a topographic  base map provided by Esri(R) for use with ArcGIS Online, the source for the dynamic web maps in this series.  More information on ArcGIS Online and the base maps can be found at http://www.arcgis.com.

    All layers from the Montana State Library NRIS, or the Montana Base Map Service Center were downloaded between September and November, 2011.  Other layers obtained by Geodata Services, Inc. from agencies were gathered during the calendar year 2011 from the most recent data available.  A few layers were 2010 vintage.  Most map layers in this data are temporal in nature and are updated by the responsible agency on a regular basis.  If you need the most timely data is is always prudent to go back to the source and check for updates.
